The Role of the Coach

  • Educator — teaches interscholastic athletics within the educational setting; models an educational philosophy; understands the game and the athletes and knows how to teach both (rules of motor learning).
  • Professional — prepared, punctual, ethical, and honest; demonstrates class.
  • Leader — confidence to stand alone, courage to make tough decisions, and compassion to listen to the needs of others. (See the leadership section of the Great Teams book.)
  • Expert — knowledgeable; current in trends, training, tactics, and technique.
